It has been over 18 months since Bangladesh had its first covid 19 case. The pandemic has been very difficult for the people of Bangladesh not just only because of the health crisis but also the economic breakdown the people have been facing due to lockdowns. While the health sector and the national economy is still struggling, unfortunately since March 2020 all educational institutions remain closed as per the Government orders.
The country is now going through the second wave of the pandemic and it has been disastrous. The delta variant being more infectious and deadly, the country has seen a drastic rise in deaths and infection. Amidst the situation the Government of Bangladesh has decided to extend the ongoing closure of schools and other educational institutions until August 30 amid a surge in Covid-19 infections.
The Education Ministry, in a notification, announced that all secondary and higher secondary level educational institutions, including Ebtedayee and Qawmi madrasas, would remain closed until the said period.
Uttaran has established Samakal Secondary School in 1982 and Shishutirtho Elementary school in 1996 and since then we have supported thousands of underprivileged children in getting access to quality education free of cost. In the past decades we have faced various natural disasters but the pandemic has remained out of control in our working area. The average infection rate in the past two months was near about 40% and hundreds of people have died. Shishutirtho School's premises have now turned into an oxygen bank and make shift front line volunteer's residence operated by Uttaran.
Amidst the situation Uttaran along with the school management committees have decided to stop the home assignments, online classes and other educational activities for the time being as the country went to a lockdown. Even though the lockdown is over, the situation is still out of control as the hospitals are overwhelmed and the whole health sector is at the verge of breakdown.
We want to thank all our supporters for always being there for us and the children of South-West Bangladesh. We deeply hope that the situation will improve soon and we will be able to continue our work for the underprivileged children.
