Uttaran have been working with Global giving since 2018. A platform that enabled the NGO to support the extreme poor and Dalit children of southwest Bangladesh, a new window of opportunity for getting access to quality education. Initially 150 underprivileged children were proposed to be supported with the help of the global community. At the same time Uttaran through local community mobilization, community crowd funding and its own source of funding have supported more than 700 children in getting access to quality education of Shishutirtho and Samakal schools. These schools hosts students from nearly 20 villages of Tala sub district of Satkhira district of Bangladesh.
It’s been more than just a year with Global giving and through a strong network provided by Global giving Uttaran have learned new ways to support underprivileged children and creating a better space for quality education. The project of Global giving supports Uttaran’s goal to reduce dropout rate leading to child marriage by creating access to quality education through local community mobilization.
In the past three months Uttaran have mostly focused on creating better space for the students in their school premises.
News from Shishutirtho School:
School Bus: Uttaran have financially supported Shishutirtho School to buy a new school bus. The old school bus did not have sufficient capacity for hosting the growing number of students. The new school bus can host 55 students at a single time and which will allow more underprivileged children living at a distance to join Shishutirtho School. Uttaran is also supporting the school to provide free transport service for the underprivileged children. The new bus is more fuel efficient and ecofriendly which will discharge less carbon in the air, creating a better environment for the children.
Senior’s farewell: The primary graduates of Shishutirtho had a small farewell party. The day was celebrated with all the students of the school with various games and snacks.
Primary School Certificate Examination: The Government organized national Primary School Certificate Examination is currently ongoing. 32 students of class 5 are sitting for the exam this year. Every year the students of shishutirhto receives the highest number of award in the sub district. This year the students have worked extremely hard to do well in the exam. The school have provided after school coaching support for all the students sitting for the exam.
Study tour: A study tour were organized for the students and to firsthand experience about various agricultural practices. The students mostly learned about organic farming and its benefits.
News from Samakal School:
Infrastructural development: The school is building additional washroom and latrines for the students. Boys and girls will have separate facilities. The new washroom will also have separate changing room especially for female students.
Primary School Certificate Examination: 14 students of Samakal School are sitting for PSC examination this year. All of these students were supported by the fund raised by Global giving. The students were also provided with after school coaching.
Study tour at national historical monuments: Samakal school regular organizes study visit for the its students and with the help of Global Giving all the students are included. All the classes have study tour on a rotatory basis. This time the students have visited Martyred Memorial in Chuknagar sub district where approximately 70 students participated. The students met 10 freedom fighters from the area and learned a lot of things about Bangladesh’s history from them.
Winter clothing: Winter is finally here and the school will be supporting the most underprivileged children with winter clothing, which is currently in making.
Though the past 3 months were very eventful, but unfortunately thousands of families in the area including our students were severely affected by the recent cyclone Bulbul on 10th of November. The cyclone have created massive damage in the south west part of Bangladesh. Uttaran have already dispatched its emergency support unit and currently providing support to nearly 7000 people in area. We also want this report to act as a plea to the global community to step forward and support the children affected by the cyclone Bulbul through our project.
