Educare report: 5

The last 3 months were amazing for our children. The Secondary School Certificate results (grade 10) have been published and 65 students from Samakal High School have graduated. Among these 65 students, 34 students belonged to extreme poor underprivileged communities who were supported by our project. We are extremely delighted to announce our contributors that all of these students have graduated with excellent results. Among the 34 students, there were 55 % female and 45 % were male. A small farewell ceremony was arranged for the recent graduates from Samakal School. Also, these students are guided to continue their education through intensive community mentorship program, which encouraged them to sit for admission test to enroll in college.

Along with such wonderful results, the past three months were full of various events and extracurricular activities for the students. From February till May, we had maintained and continued a very festive journey for the schools. Our students from Samakal and Shishuritho School participated in a “Pitha” Cake festival. The event brought joy to everyone’s heart including parents and local villagers. The underprivileged students of Samakal School also went to few educational field trips. The trips taught students major environmental aspects and thousand-year-old archeological history of Bangladesh. Through our contributors’ support, this is the first time such educational field trips were organized where underprivileged students had a chance to explore new things.

An awareness programme on “Eve teasing” was also arranged by the community mentors for the students of Samakal School. Along with the community mentors, local leaders were also present at the programme. The students were exposed to the violent effects of eve teasing on girl’s mental and physical health.

The students of Samakal School for the first time held a student council through voting and the winning members included both male and female students from dalit, landless and extreme poor community. This shows the school and the society finally breaking the culture of discrimination and on their way to equal world.

At Shishutirtho School, our enthusiastic little friends had some amazing moments too. They have participated in the National Independence day celebration in Tala sub-district. They have performed an amazing drama in front of the whole city about Bangladesh’s independence. Similarly, they have also participated in the parade to show respect to the freedom fighters who have sacrificed their lives during liberation war in 1971.

The students of Shishurtho School have just finished their first term examination of the year. The results will be published soon. We hope the students who are being supported by our contributors of the project will bring amazing results to the school.

Pepsodent Toothpaste Company also came to visit Shishutirtho School to raise awareness about dental health. The students performed by dancing and singing while learning about dental hygiene. The students also received a tooth paste and brush from the programme.

We have also came to an agreement with a youth volunteer organization “KagojPotro” in Bangladesh who will support us with 400 new recycled notebooks for the underprivileged children. The programme is supposed to be held in the coming month. We will keep everyone updated.

Story of champions:

“10 years journey of endless barriers and now we stand tall as school graduates. Whatever trouble we both faced has all faded away as soon as our results were out.”

Case Study 1: I grew up in a family of five. A family known as landless. My father works as a day labor and my mother remained home to take care of us. When I was a child I saw my sister got married at an early age. I remember her face that night when she left for her husband’s home, she was crying the whole time. As I grew up, I decided to fight! A fight to marry at my own will and get educated at my own will. But it wasn’t an easy journey. I do not blame my family, I blame my poverty. There was many times where I thought that this was the end of my school, this was the end of my childhood but somehow something showed up and saved me. I had my community and my school beside me, beside my struggles which gave me the feeling that I am not alone. My school and my community mentor Nahar Apa have fought my marriage proposals with me, supported me with all sorts of financial necessity for my education. Even last year I received a shoe, the first white shoe of my life. While I received it, my mentor said to me that you will take this to collage, once you are a graduate.

The day is finally here, I am waiting to wear my white shoe to my new collage. I will become a teacher someday and will teach the kids in my village for free, so a bigger change will come.

Case Study 2:  I am just a happy girl. I know my weaknesses but I never let it to pull put me down on my knees. I am from a Dalit (untouchable) community and I smile every time when I say this because I am proud of this. I am not a good student and was never fond of my school till my last few years, when I finally made friends.

From 2017 or so, somehow everything in my school started changing. Everyone started to enjoy school and the school had something new to offer every day. All the students in my class acted like I was part of them too, I am no different or from a different caste. I was surprised for few months. From 2018 I started receiving new school dress, books, pens, shoes and what not. I loved school even more. I felt so new and so together with the rest of the students.

The best part of my life was that my parents never forced me to study hard or be first in the class, they were just so happy to see that I am one of the first few from my community to continue education and now standing as a school graduate.

I never want to leave Samakal School but they tell me I have done very good results and I need to move on to college. I do understand the point, so I decided I will do even better. Better because I want to become a lawyer. A lawyer who will stand to fight for the rights of Dalit community.
