Summary

Libraries Without Borders will bring 60 e-library programs to 8 provinces in Ecuador, including those most affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 2016. This program will give Ecuadorian children in vulnerable rural and earthquake-affected communities access to carefully curated educational materials that promote literacy, numeracy and digital literacy. Our team will train local partners in best-practices for leveraging technology to attain measurable educational outcomes.

Challenge

Over 200 schools were damaged after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador last year, which has halted the education of thousands of students. This program will allow Ecuadorian students in vulnerable rural and earthquake-affected communities to gain access to educational resources that have been carefully curated for their use. Our team will train local partners in best-practices in leveraging technology to tie expanded access to measurable educational outcomes.

Solution

This program will bring customized digital libraries to communities that lack access to internet connection in rural and coastal regions of Ecuador. Each e-library kit is estimated to meaningfully engage with 600 unique users over the course of 3 years. The e-library programs offer a flexible and dynamic educational environment that effectively decrease the gap in accessing information. These programs will increase students' curiosity for learning and expand their professional opportunities.

Long-Term Impact

LWB will increase literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy for over 36,000 K-12 students by equipping local organizations with e-library kits. The e-library technology, along with LWB's facilitator trainings, will equip local educators with the capacity to simultaneously serve greater numbers of students in a more customized fashion, and guide educators to serve as coaches rather than content experts.
