Challenge

Many young people in Colombia are exposed to drugs and illegal recruitment by armed groups and criminal gangs. The poor level of education and the constant exposure to drugs and armed conflict generates a high level of unemployment among young people who see their opportunities reduced by being born in the wrong neighborhood. For that reason, is essential to equip at-risk youth with the tools that empower them to successfully participate in their society.

Solution

This program will train 30 at-risk young people between the ages of 15 and 24 in media technology through a community radio in order to promote holistic personal, mental, and emotional development, while distancing them from unproductive and dangerous activities. This program focuses its efforts on giving young people the opportunity to express themselves while learning to relate to others.

Long-Term Impact

Children and youth that participate in the program will learn not only to express themselves but to create the opportunities needed to generate a change in their community. Through the community radio station they will experience the importance of media in a society and will acquire the motivation and knowledge needed to develop entrepreneurial ventures that will benefit their communities and bring credibility back to their neighborhoods.
