Conservation efforts lead to a cleaner, happier, and healthier community! In Rubuguri, Uganda, Angel Projects staff members continue to meet once a week to turn plastic waste into building materials called Ecobricks. These bricks have been used to build benches and walls, and they've been very effective in removing pounds and pounds of plastic waste from the area. This is especially important in a place without garbage pickup services.
Another important conservation effort in Rubuguri has been the construction and utilization of the greenhouse. In 2021, volunteers from the States worked with local people to build a greenhouse out of repurposed plastic bottles. This project not only served as a way to remove waste from the community but also as a source of nutritional vegetables and herbs for the elderly members of the community. The Ecobricks project was born from the greehouse project as staff members problem-solved to find a way to repurpose the plastic bottles once again as they aged and needed to be removed from the greenhouse. Thus, the two conservation projects go hand-in-hand.
In addition, Angel Projects staff members use the greenhouse as a teaching tool for the community. Periodically, they invite members of the community to visit the greenhouse to learn about reusing waste, particularly plastic waste, and they also teach about nutrition and the importance of vegetables in a person's diet. Most Ugandans eat a lot of starchy foods and not many green vegetables, so this information is extremely important in order to build a healthier community.
The results of these conservation projects have been a lot of community interest and interaction, healther diets, and a cleaner atmosphere. The Angel Projects hopes to continue to lead the conservation efforts in Rubuguri, and we'd like to thank our generous sponsors for helping to make these projects possible.
