The project aims at improving livelihoods of 2000 smallholder coffee farmers through the promotion of ecological wet mills for primary processing of coffee
Old, inefficient and environmentally unfriendly processing machines are a common feature in the coffee sector in Kenya. This has constrained efforts of more than 400,000 smallholder farmers to benefit from the improved market prices of coffee which are usually determined by the quality yield of machinery used during post-harvesting.This project is set to benefit more than 2000 smallholder coffee farmers who market their coffee through cooperative societies
The main activities of the project involve capacity building of target beneficiaries through training and technical assistance. Donations will be channeled and disbursed from a revolving fund to target beneficiaries.
With the promotion of ecological wet mills, cooperatives will be able to process coffee much faster and in a more sustainable way, by using less water and energy. The project has great potential in improving income and livelihoods of member farmers.
