Summary

The project supports the Foundation for establishing a modern, well-equipped vocational school in a rural area of Indonesia, with a capacity of 300 students from underprivileged groups. This community school will equip students with various adequate life skills, character education, and soft skills and prepare them to continue their education at university and become young entrepreneurs. It helps us construct buildings, provide student scholarships, and complete supporting teaching facilities.

Challenge

According to Indonesian statistics, almost half (49.41%) of poor households work in agriculture, and 54.6% of total poor households live in rural areas. Farmers earn an average of IDR 55,503 (US$3.44) daily, the lowest revenue compared to other sectors. Poverty often restrains the education of children and youth from low-income families who cannot afford educational expenses such as school fees, books, uniforms, and transportation. It creates a cycle of poverty and increases vulnerability.

Solution

To boost our work empowering disadvantaged groups in economics and education, INFEST is establishing "Punthuk Sewu" vocational school to provide affordable vocational education for youth and other disadvantaged groups, improving their capacity and employability for decent work and breaking the poverty cycle. We develop a residential education program that provides opportunities to prepare students with technical skills, nurture soft skills and personalities, and adequately explore the sciences.

Long-Term Impact

Education, including training, makes individuals employable, enables them to access decent work, and escapes poverty. It also enhances individuals' productivity and income-earning opportunities, mobility in the labor market, and choice of career opportunities or entrepreneurship. This project is a long-term social investment in preparing a new generation in Indonesia. We expect this investment to impact the welfare of individuals and families of disadvantaged groups in the future.
