The project focuses on do-it-yourself Eco-toilets. Local people will be trained on how to build these toilets. Materials that cannot be found or made locally will be donated, ie. corrugated metal sheets and PVC pipes. The people build the bricks with dirt, mud and straw. The project takes place in the village of Micani about 4000 meters above sea level and at a 5 hours walk from the nearest town. We want the people to have a better quality of life and to improve their overall well-being.
Diarrheal disease affects mostly children under 5 years and can be attributed to poor conditions of water, sanitation and hygiene. Diarrhea kills 15-20 children per 1000 live births in rural areas of Bolivia. Regarding toilet or latrine coverage, whereas nationwide it is 70%, in rural areas of San Pedro de Buena Vista is only 7% - hardly anyone has a toilet or a latrine. The chronical effects of parasitic infections affect survival, health and nutritional status of children.
People will be trained to solve their problems with their own resources and capacities. Thanks to the construction and use of the Eco-toilet people will have a better quality of life and improve overall well-being. Because of its do-it-yourself design people are able to adjust it to their preferences and taste, which will increase their acceptance and use. Halthy habits will be formed for the families, which will generate positive health impact through healthy habits for the generations to come.
The project is already an extension of a similar project carried out by the Sodis Foundation. We want to work hand in hand with local authorities to implement more bathrooms in other communities. The project is planned as a model for surrounding families and communities. We want to help people starting a healthier style of life, which will create health benefits for many years.
