Eco-Technology Improves the Lives of Families

By Gillian Wilson | Communications Director, IDEX

At both demonstration sites in Chiapas and Michoacán, IRRI installed a wood-saving stove and a biogas digester that demonstrate techniques for reducing the use of wood for cooking and heating. The biogas digesters have improved air quality and have minimized odorous smells and flies.

IRRI installed a low-cost water treatment system for EduPaz (Education for Peace), who is one of IDEX’s current partners. They also trained 2 local staff members from EduPaz on how to operate and maintain the demonstration site facilities. In addition, IRRI facilitated 6 eco-technology workshops at their demonstration sites where a total of 280 people participated.

As part of a study on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, IRRI has been measuring gas usage, studying the dynamics of temperature, and surveying users of green technologies. This way, IRRI can gather constructive information in order to make basic calculations to determine the amount of emissions that can be reduced.

IRRI has demonstrated great dedication to promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. Thanks to donors’ support, IRRI was able to provide education, develop new technologies, and install systems that help low-income families meet their energy, water and sanitation needs in a sustainable manner.
