Challenge

In an area of Zambia where less than 20% of children finish school and where 90% of the population relies on their land or Lake Kariba for their livelihoods, food and health security is linked to reliable weather patterns. The reliance on rain-fed crops has always made income and jobs unpredictable but over the last decade, the continuous onslaught of extreme climate-induced hazards such as droughts, flooding, and extreme temperatures has further exacerbated these challenges.

Solution

The effects of climate change have left devastating impacts on the lives of young people, including a sharp increase in cases of child marriage and hunger in Sinazongwe. Our new centre seeks to empower 300 young people a year, by providing comprehensive support in adapting to the effects of climate change. The centre will provide the district with the first dedicated space to offer high quality training in organic agriculture, tailoring and weaving, IT and entrepreneurship all in one place.

Long-Term Impact

This project will be actively working towards creating alternative income opportunities for young people through sustainable agricultural practices and vocational skills initiatives. By diversifying their income sources and reducing dependence on fragile ecosystems, we can help safeguard their livelihoods against climate-related risks. In the past we have seen our agricultural projects reduce extreme poverty by 20% and a reliance on unsustainable methods of fishing by 5%.
