Eco Green Scholarship Program for Future leaders

Summary

Over the years, we worked with children in government schools through Eco Green Clubs, planting seeds of environmental stewardship and leadership. However, our club members face a critical barrier: poverty. Despite their academic potential, many struggle with school fees, feeding fees, and materials, forcing them to drop out. We have been supporting 17 students with scholarships and witnessed tremendous transformation: they excel academically and become passionate environmental leaders

Challenge

Rwanda has achieved 98% primary enrollment, yet only 71% complete primary education, and completion rates for poor children are just 19% compared to 71% for wealthier families. Even with "fee-free" education, hidden costs push families to pull children from school. Starting January 2027, public school fees and feeding contributions will increase: primary feeding rises from 975 to 2,000 RWF per term and boarding school fees from 85,000 to 110,000 RWF per term. Our members face these barriers.

Solution

This project provides holistic scholarships to 100 vulnerable Eco Club members in Rwanda, covering school fees, feeding, materials, and Eco Club activities. By removing financial barriers-including the January 2027 fee increases-students stay in school, receive nutritious meals, and continue their environmental leadership development. Through mentorship and Eco Club participation, scholars grow into problem-solvers and environmental stewards who give back to their communities.

Long-Term Impact

This project creates lasting change for vulnerable students annually and their communities. Scholarship recipients complete secondary education, pursue careers in environmental conservation, agriculture, or other fields, and become problem-solvers and environmental stewards. They break the cycle of poverty, improving economic opportunities for themselves and their families. As peer educators, they teach their families and communities about environmental stewardship, creating a ripple effect.
