enjuba continues to actively support early childhood development through a targeted program in Mayuge, Eastern Uganda, focusing on the holistic growth of young learners. We recently, held a weeklong teacher training session at the Lab School in Kampala, emphasizing critical areas like social-emotional learning and self-regulation. This training aimed to equip teachers with techniques to support children's emotional needs and improve classroom management, helping students develop essential social skills and self-control.
Following the training, teachers have shown notable progress in implementing these new strategies, creating a more nurturing and structured learning environment. Teachers report that children are highly motivated and eager to learn, reflecting a positive response to the structured and supportive classroom dynamics. Teachers have begun observing the children’s improvement in emotional regulation, which is expected to contribute positively to their learning and overall development.
However, the program faces several significant challenges. One major issue is the lack of food for students during the school day. This leads to fatigue, with many children starting to doze off by 11 a.m., which greatly affects their ability to focus and engage with the material. Additionally, teacher retention remains a critical challenge, as educators are paid only $30 a month. This low wage is not sufficient to meet basic living needs, leading many trained teachers to leave for higher-paying opportunities elsewhere. This turnover impacts the consistency of the program, as new teachers must be continually trained.
In summary, while enjuba’s early childhood intervention is making meaningful progress in Mayuge, addressing issues like food provision for students and improving teacher salaries would significantly enhance the program's sustainability and overall impact. We are exploring ways in which we can be able to support the children with food and the teachers with a stipend.
