East Africa Drought Crisis

by ActionAid International USA Vetted since 2008 Top Ranked Effective Nonprofit

The severe drought across Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda and Djibouti has left an estimated 11.5 million people on the brink of starvation. Their one and only meal may be a meager helping of boiled beans or a soup made from cooking oil. Most days, they will go without. This fund is helping ActionAid deliver emergency food supplies and water to many people who are struggling to survive in the region.

Consistently poor rainfall over the past two years in East Africa has had a cumulative effect and the land has been unable to recover. 2011 has so far proved the driest year in the region since 1951. As a result, families have virtually run out of food and water. Crops have failed and water holes are drying up. The drought has meant there is little arable grazing land or water for animals. Families are having to watch the livestock- their main way of feeding their families - weaken and die.

The project aims to provide 120,000 of most vulnerable people with emergency supplies of food and water. A lack of water in schools is forcing their closure and those without a free daily meal program in place are reporting dwindling numbers of pupils as families are leaving their homes in search of food and water. Our school feeding programs will be targeted at the most severely affected areas and where drop-out rates are highest.

Long-Term Impact

In addition to our work providing life-saving support to communities, we will work to ensure that communities have long-term access to water, and that families have the resources they need to recover. We will also support farmers in the area so they can be better prepared when the rains do arrive.
