Thankfully, and entirely possible only as a result of supporters like you, we fortuitously installed solar power and a 1000-gallon water tank at the Katmandu shelter.
Following the April 25th 2015 earthquake we became defacto rescue and emergency relief responders. JHF was the only one who came to the remote villages, during the first critical two weeks in the Gorkha district. JHF has the only infrastructure, capability and know how to assist the many villagers living near the epicenter. We went to remote villages on day two, airlifting 250 seriously injured to hospitals. We provided food, tarp tents and blankets. We have since delivered mattresses; medical supplies, more food and over 50 tons of rice to remote villages and to assist hospitalized once they were released.
Loading rice and supplies, then driving for North of 10 hours (in optimal conditions) is the easiest part. The hardest, will be when our volunteers will be carrying the rice on their backs for 2 to 3 days until thy reach their destinations. Land slides are ongoing and deathly. Roads are wiped out in places and extremely dangerous. At the same time it is the monsoon like season, now apparently earth quake season and walking anywhere in Nepal, particularly in the giant foothills is like playing Russian Roulette.
