Earthquake Relief for Nepal

Thank you for your continued support to the earthquake survivors of Nepal. In last report, I shared a story about Nawaraj and his family whose life was changed because of your generosity. In the past three months we were able to help many more people like Nawaraj who were affected by the earthquake.  

With your help, we were able to build 50 additional shelters for the people affected by the earthquake of April-May, 2015. Your donation has provided roof to people from different walks of lives including a newborn child, older people, teachers, healthcare workers, farmers, and social workers and several dozen children. The need for shelter continues and we hope to be able to provide help to more people in the future. 

Thanks to you, the donor, and our volunteers, supporters, partners, and global giving team for helping us provide immediate disaster relief to approximately 600 families in various earthquake affected areas of Nepal.

Today, I will share with you even greater news about the impact you have made  in these earthquake survivors’ lives ! With your help, the Binaytara Foundation was able to provide Nawaraj and his family a home to shelter themselves from the monsoon rain. 

Nawaraj lives in Khadga Bhanjyang village of Nuwakot District in Nepal. He lost his house to last April’s earthquake. He and his family were living in a tent made of plastics. “We were able to salvage some wood and some doors and windows from my house. But most of it is unusable. I do not know how I can protect the children from monsoon rain living in a plastic tent.” Nawaraj said to our volunteers as he retrieved whatever pieces of wood or metal he could find from the debris of his old house. 

With your donation, the Binaytara Foundation and its local partner Help Nepal Network helped Nawaraj and 45 other families in Khadga Bhanjyang village of Nuwakot district build temporary homes made of corrugated tin that can stand the monsoon. The tin roof and other materials used to build these temporary homes can be used in permanent homes when Nawaraj and the villagers are able to build one for themselves. 

Today, Nawaraj and his family live in their newly built temporary home, protected from the monsoon rain. They were able to keep their food supply protected from the rain and Narwaraj and his wife have returned to the field to grow crops for next year.  His children are happy to be back to school even though they have to study under open sky because the earthquake severely damaged their classrooms.

We provided the villagers the corrugated tins, and they scrambled their tools and the salvaged pieces of their old houses to turn the corugated tins into homes. Nawaraj and other villagers’ enthusiasm, courage, and resilience inspires us everyday as we work together to build homes and build hopes for these earthquake survivors. The work is not done yet. There are many families like Nawaraj needing a shelter like this. Our goal is to build temporary homes for 800 families. It only costs $135 to build a temporary home for one family. Can you help a family like Nawaraj’s have a roof over their head?
