Summary

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health challenge in Viet Nam, especially in mountainous, border, and remote island communities with limited healthcare access. Ethnic minority populations face barriers including poverty, distance, stigma, and shortages of healthcare services. This project will use ultra-portable X-ray devices and computer-aided detection software to bring community-based TB screening to 10,000 vulnerable people and connect those with TB to life-saving treatment.

Challenge

Many people in mountainous, border, and remote island communities in Viet Nam still lack access to timely TB diagnosis and care. Ethnic minority populations face additional barriers, including poverty, language differences, stigma, and limited healthcare services. Women and girls often face social and financial restrictions on seeking care. Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW prioritizes these underserved populations, but reaching them remains difficult and costly.

Solution

This project will use portable X-ray devices and computer-aided detection software to bring TB screening directly to hard-to-reach communities across Viet Nam. Community screening campaigns will reach at least 15,000 people, especially ethnic minority populations, women, and low-income families. People with suspected TB will be linked to testing and treatment, supporting implementation of Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW in underserved areas.

Long-Term Impact

By bringing TB screening closer to underserved communities, this project will help reduce delays in diagnosis, prevent avoidable deaths, and reduce transmission of TB in remote areas. The project will strengthen community-based healthcare systems, improve access to modern diagnostic technology, and support Viet Nam's goal of ending TB as a public health threat by 2035. If successful, the model could be expanded nationwide to reach other vulnerable populations.
