INTRODUCTION
Warm greetings from Drylands Natural Resources Centre (DNRC) fraternity. We wish to share our progress report on forestry training and finance for 800 farmers working with DNRC. The organization continues to endeavor to meet her objectives of sustainable development through community regeneration, environmental regeneration and economic regeneration. Her approach is guided by Agroecology/ Permaculture principles and majorly focusing on diversity as the key approach to our work.In this regard, DNRC main tree nursery propagates over 40 diverse drylands tree species focusing on trees for timber, agroforestry, conservation, fruits, fibre, fodder, fuel among others. Most of older trees planted by our farmers have matured and they continue to be harvested for both timber and non timber products and providing ecosystem services harvested for timber, others for firewood and fruits trees are mature and now giving fruits.Tree products such as fruits, firewood are harvested by our farmers for domestic use and others sold for income. During the reporting quarter, we majorly embarked on propagation of different trees species in the tree nursery as well as managing the existing seedlings in the tree nursery as we wait for the October -December rains to begin issuing the seedlings to the farmers. We also engaged in individual farmers follow ups, group trainings and engaged in monitoring of tree holes preparation as farmers get ready to plant the trees when the rains begin. Below are detailed activities during this reporting period.
DNRC TREE NURSERY
During the reporting quarter, DNRC staff responsible for the tree nursery were busy propagating different species.The following different species were propagated: Senna Siemea, senna spectabilis, Gravelia, avocado, Casuarina, Cyprus, Eucalyptus, pawpaw, Melia vonkensii, passion, mangoes, zygium, neem, citrus, moringa, mulberry,croton, acacias, taminalia brownii, mangoe, guavas among others.A total of 10730 diverse seedlings have been propagated during the reporting quarter. Other main activites in the nursery were: potting, transplanting, IPM, root pruning, manuring,weeding, arranging pots, grafting and watering.
TRAINING AND OUTREACH
During the reporting period, the outreach personnel team was busy mobilizing and training farmer groups on issues of woodlot management and woodlot establishment for the newly recruited farmers. Other trainings were done on how to prune as well as identifying selective harvesting if need be. The team was also busy sensitizing farmers to start preparing their holes to be ready for planting trees for the upcoming October- December rains. As we also work with schools, the outreach personnel were also busy sensitizing and mobilizing schools to also get ready for the upcoming October-December rains tree planting season.
CHALLENGES
We experienced cold season which lead to some seedlings being affected by powdery mildew . We managed this by use of Integrated Pest management.
