Project Report | May 22, 2014
A supply shipment arrives in Kamashi this month

By Lianna Tabar | Country Representative-Ethiopia

We are very thankful to be progressing forward with the generous support provided through GlobalGiving thus far! KHI will be posting a series of reports on GlobalGiving as our Kamashi Hospital project continues. In this our first report, we would like to share a glimpse of how every bit of support and every step counts until we meet our end goal.

Recent months at Kamashi have seen final touches being completed on the first hospital block, all of which are necessary before the medical equipment arrives. One of the most challenging aspects of constructing a hospital in remote Kamashi is the Logistics involved. Constantly, the KHI-E Construction and Logistics staff are coordinating to negotiate deadlines and reality. “Can we still send the truck with supplies tomorrow, or has the recent rainfall made the road to Kamashi un-traversable?”…“One variety of this material is available a few hours from Kamashi, but is the better quality version available in the capital worth the extra time and cost?”…“The painters are waiting on site to apply the final layer of paint after the floor tile has been completed, the floor tiles will be available in Addis Ababa two to three weeks after we place the order, the truck for transport is available now or in one month, and there is a risk our tile will be sold if we do not pick it up as soon as it is ready.” So what comes first, the tile or the transport?...

This month, thanks largely to our GlobalGiving supporters, the KHI-E team is finally able to arrange the transport of the final floor tile shipment necessary to complete the floors in Block One. This is requiring a large truck filled with 5,000kilos (11,000lbs) of tile, traveling over 525Km (326 miles) of capricious road from the capital city to Kamashi town. Once the tile is arrived and laid, other final touches can take place, such as the final layers of paint. We are only able to complete this vital logistical piece of the puzzle now thanks to your help!

“Amesegenalehu!” for all of your continuing generous support, whether it be with donation or your unwavering good wishes! With your additional support, our next goal of transporting medical equipment can also be met!
