While much of our job is providing espert veterinary medicine, it is also extending compassion. As a 24/7 emergency, critical and specialty care hospital, we have to become part of a clients' care family in the blink of an eye. That's why everything we do at DoveLewis ultimately boils down to supporting and honoring the special bond between pats and their people.
Holidays at DoveLewis are always busy, but this Memorial Day broke records. Medical staff treated 95 animal patients in the 24-hour period. A total of 253 patients were treated between Saturday, May 27, and Monday, May 29.
On average, DoveLewis treats 40 to 50 patients each day. As Portland’s population grows, so does its pet population. DoveLewis President and CEO Ron Morgan also attributes the growing patient numbers to pet owners who are willing to go the extra mile for their animals. “Pets are like family, and that’s how many owners treat them,” Ron said. “When their family member has an emergency or needs to see a specialist, they don’t want to take chances. They seek treatment immediately and they choose the best doctors possible – and that high level of care is available at DoveLewis.”
DoveLewis is here for every type of animal - even chickens! FedEx the chicken (whose sister’s name is UPS!) was brought to DoveLewis for a head laceration. The bleeding was so persistent that Dr. Sarah Tauber (pictured with FedEx) and surgeon Dr. Coby Richter tried four types of wound care. In the middle of her treatment, FedEx began squawking loudly and wiggling her behind. To the surprise of her medical staff, she laid an egg on the exam table! After the excitement, the doctors were able to cease the bleeding. FedEx went home happy and her owner was kind enough to leave the egg with Dr. Tauber.
No matter the time of day, condition of the animal, or whether the creature is a stray or part of a loving home, DoveLewis is able to provide the best medical care because of the generosity of donors like you. Thank you for your support.
