K9 Officer Ike
On September 1st, K9 Officer Ike, a 6-year old Belgian Malinois with the Vancouver Police Department, was brought to DoveLewis with multiple stab wounds to his chest, back and head, which he received while attempting to make contact with a suspect. Ike continued to fight for his life until he eventually succumbed to his injuries. "The loss of any police officer is tragic, and Ike's death is a huge loss to the Vancouver Police Department, Ike's partner, Officer Jack Anderson, and all police agencies," said Ron Morgan, CEO of DoveLewis. "We offer our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Officer Anderson, his family and the entire Vancouver Police Department. Ike was a very tough dog and both he and the DoveLewis medical team fought hard for his life. His loss in the line of duty is a loss for our community." After Ike's passing, the Vancouver Police Department K9 Unit presented a plaque to DoveLewis for the "extraordinary lifesaving efforts, professionalism and overwhileming support of K9 Ike and the entire Vancouver Police K9 Unit."

DoveLewis was featured in the August issue of Veterinary Practice News regarding our new partnership with Vetstream, which will provide the developing world with free or low-cost continuing education tools from DoveLewis' On the Floor @Dove digital library. This partnership makes it possible to improve veterinary care on a glogal scale by providing veterinary education at preferential rates in countries where there is an urgent need for affordable veterinary education and training.
BARKS is a hit with local schools - Pictured above are program leader Vanesa Vizuete and her Irish Setter, Tratso
Building Animal Relationships with Kids Safely (BARKS) is DoveLewis' newest community program. Vanesa and her Iris Setter, Tratso, have given dog bite prevention presentations to 678 children from K-5th Grade in Portland area schools through October of 2015. The mission of this program, led by Vanesa and Tratso, is to educate children, parents and families about how to build strong bonds between children and dogs while reducing the risk of dog bites. What do you think about our new program? Could your family have been helped by a BARKS type presentation in your city?
A total of 1,302 injured or ill patients checked in at DoveLewis in August, which is up from a total of 1,221 in August of 2014. And in September, 1,309 patients were seen, which is an increase of 74 patients, or 6%, from September of 2014.
We could not do all we do here for the 13,000+ injured or ill animals who come through our doors at DoveLewis 'round the clock every year without our wonderfuil supporters. Thanks if you have supported DoveLewis in the past, and thanks in advance if you are considering or plan to make a donation to support DoveLewis. The humans and the animals at DoveLewis send you a huge thanks for your support - your support helps make all this possible!
