Summary

Farmers living in the eastern jungle region of Peru live in extreme poverty. In the last decade farmers started losing on average 70% of their coffee crop which prevents them from making double their current income. With our expertise in pest and plague management, we will work with a cohort of 50 dedicated farmers in 4 coffee communities. The success of this first cohort will be demonstrated to more coffee growing communities and we will leverage the success to scale up and reach more farmers.

Challenge

Farmers living in Quencca Mapacho of the district of Lares live in extreme poverty. The reason? In the last decade farmers started losing on average 70% of their coffee crop to diseases like Coffee Leaf Rust. Due to the unique mountainous climate, the coffee produced here is some of the best in the world yet families continue to live in dire poverty. The Andean Alliance will work intensively with motivated coffee farmers and the results will be incredibly impactful.

Solution

We will focus on two simple solutions: 1. Intensive agroecological pests and plague management techniques that will lower the toll of coffee disease allowing farmers to double their production 2. Intensive production and post production training that will help farmers raise their coffee score allowing them to sell their product for a higher price

Long-Term Impact

The Andean Alliance is an agriculture based organization with extensive experience in agro ecological techniques We are experts in soil fertility and pest and plague management. Our skills are particularly positioned to solve the devastating impacts of coffee plant disease. Incredibly, our ability to help farmers manage the disease will bring them out of poverty and double their income in the next 4 years.
