Almost one year ago we asked you to join us in making sure that $5K didn’t stop outstanding teenagers from taking advantage of their full scholarship to come to UWC Costa Rica.

One year and $41,548 later, we celebrate together that our 8 agents of change students from across Latin America are winding up their first semester at UWC Costa Rica. Read our November newsletter to learn more about our student’s journey so far.

And we have much more to celebrate with you!  We invite you to read our Impact Report for the academic year 2018-2019.  Thanks to your support, our UWC Costa Rica programs continue creating transformative experiences to educate agents fo change and inspire impact.  Your generosity empowers us to continue living our mission of making education a force to unite and transform. Thank you!

This coming Tuesday, December 3 we will be closing this project page to celebrate that our goal has been reached.  That day we will also be launching our new #GivingTuesday campaign to support 5 key programs at UWC Costa Rica:

  • Annual Fund: Support the day-to-day operation at UWC Costa Rica providing us with unrestricted funds that supporting emerging needs and College programs
  • Scholarship Fund: Become a champion of our intentionally diverse learning community by helping us provide 80% of our students with the financial support they need to live the transformative UWC Costa Rica experience
  • Service Week: Help us take the UWC mission off-campus and into 20+ communities across Costa Rica
  • Wellness Program: Partner with us in keeping emotional, mental and physical health as cornerstones of the UWC Costa Rica community
  • Staff Professional Development: Empower our staff to be life-long learners and be the best educators

We hope that you can join us once more to continue changing the future of a new generation of agents of change. Check out our new campaign at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/uwccostarica20/

UWC Costa Rica's Class of 2021!
UWC Costa Rica's Class of 2021!

We are very excited to introduce you to the amazing 100 students from 53 countries around the world who make up our Class of 2021 who finally arrived on our campus last week.

Eight of these students would not be on campus without your support; they come from Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and two from Peru. All of them proudly represent their countries and are looking forward to sharing their stories and dreams.

We are eager to continue sharing more updates and let our students tell you more about their journey through this transformational experience we call UWC.

In the meantime, check out our Facebook page to see pictures and stories about the Class of 2021’s first days on campus and our traditional community-wide retreat (Roble Alto camp), and the upcoming Inter-Residence tournament.

Warmly,

Jose Pablo Rojas-Brewer

Our Admissions Department says hello!
Our Admissions Department says hello!

With our graduation taking place this coming Sunday, our community is gearing up to the closing of our academic year and looking forward to welcoming more than 200 parents, family members and friends to celebrate together the Class of 2019 this weekend.

At the same time our Admissions department is also hard at work preparing the arrival of the Class of 2021.  In the picture above, you can meet Annette Grew, our Admissions Director, and Ingrid Madrigal, our Admissions Assistant, who are in the process of carefully reviewing all the student applications that we have received from our National Committees and the Global Selection Process (GSP)  program.

From packing lists, to visa and travel arrangements, to securing all the important information needed for these students to start at UWC Costa Rica, Annette and Ingrid will be working closely with our 105 new students and their families to ensure their safe arrival to Costa Rica in August throughout this summer.

Thanks to Annette and Ingrid, here is a sneak peek at some of the countries confirmed to be represented by the Class of 2021:

  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Bolivia
  • Costa Rica
  • Dominican Republic / Haiti
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Nicaragua
  • Peru
  • Paraguay
  • Taiwan
  • Tunisia
  • Uruguay

As you can see, the Class of 2021 will have a strong representation from our host region of Latin America and the Caribbean, with at least 15 of them receiving the full scholarship thy need to access their UWC dream, something we feel very excited about.

Please continue sharing our project and inviting your family and friends to join us as we still have a bit to go to accomplish our goal of $60,000 to make sure that all of our Class of 2021 students receive the extra support they need.  Though their full scholarships are secured, many of them still need our help to support their travel and other student success funds. Let’s make sure that as little as $1,000 does not keep a single student from coming to UWC Costa Rica this August!

Un abrazo,

Annette, Ingrid and all the UWC Costa Rica team

UWC Selection Camp in Costa Rica
UWC Selection Camp in Costa Rica

Central to the ethos of UWC is the belief that education can bring together young people from all backgrounds on the basis of their shared humanity; to engage with the possibility of social change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership.  This is why every year at UWC Costa Rica, and through your support, we bring together a deliberately diverse group of young people that represent both the rich cultural heritages and the prevailing tensions of our world to empower them to become agents of positive change .

We are able to do this thanks to UWC's unique National Committee system that allows us to select outstanding students in their own countries through a network of more than 3,000 volunteers in 155 countries.  As we speak most National Committees around the world are hard at work to finalize their selection processes or sending their student nominations to the 17 UWC Colleges and Schools -including UWC Costa Rica!

The picture above is from the student Selection Camp run by the UWC National Committee in Costa Rica that took place at UWC Costa Rica on October 2018.  For our students, their transformational education journey begins with their selection process, and the Costa Rican National Committee is a great example of this.

This Committee has transformed their selection process into a youth social entrepreneurship experience.  As part of the selection process, these young men and women work together to identify challenges that affect their communities and create innovative solutions to address these needs all the while receiving workshops to identify their own potential as agents of change and gaining basic project planning and management skills.   We invite you to visit the Facebook page of the Costa Rican National Committee to see videos of the projects being created by these incredible young people at https://www.facebook.com/uwccrcomitenacional/

3 of the youth in the photo will soon receive their official admission to UWC Costa Rica with full scholarships.  Thanks to you, their scholarships will be strengthened to cover the expenses associated with coming to a UWC that aren't covered by their full scholarships such as University Admission costs, language tutoring in English, psychological support and more.  Thank you for joining us in believing in these young men and women and showing them that their circumstances will not limit their potential!

So far, together we've raised $11,019 securing the $5K needed for 2 of the 12 full scholars that need our support next year.  Please help us one more time by sharing this campaign with your family and friends networks and inviting them to join us so that we can secure the funding the 10 remaining students still need.

Thank you,

Paola Protti
