Between June 28 and July 6, 2025 in Belterra, ONG Zoé carried out the 35th Surgical Expedition, bringing specialized care to the local population and to three indigenous villages in the area. We set up a field hospital, transported around half a ton of donated equipment and supplies, and provided consultations, diagnostic tests and surgeries that would be otherwise difficult to access locally.
During the expedition we served 2,219 people in total — including 996 consultations, 1,063 diagnostic tests, and 108 surgeries (60 dermatological procedures, 44 general surgeries and 4 gynecological procedures). For the first time in Zoé’s history we performed audiometry and physiatric exams on site. We also donated 173 pairs of eyeglasses, restoring sight and improving daily life for many patients.
Team and partnerships: the mission involved 48 volunteers (clinical and support personnel) who contributed approximately 2,500 hours of volunteer work. The expedition was made possible by institutional partners, hospital collaborators, universities and corporate donors who provided supplies, equipment and logistical support.
Financial transparency: direct expenses paid from Zoé’s account for this expedition totaled R$ 289,181, with itemized costs for operations, supplies, travel and other categories documented in the full report. All receipts and supporting documents are available on request. The estimated economic value of volunteer time (not included in the bank expenses) is approximately R$ 611,600.
Impact and next steps: beyond immediate clinical care (including skin oncology procedures, general and gynecological surgeries, rehabilitation and triage), the expedition provided hands-on training opportunities for students and strengthened our relationship with the visited villages. We will continue clinical follow-up (e.g., final fitting of donated eyeglasses) and plan scheduled return visits for continued care and monitoring.
We are deeply grateful to our donors and partners — their support made this mission possible. For further information, detailed financial breakdowns, or to support upcoming expeditions, please visit our donation page https://ongzoe.org/?form=doe or contact us directly.
