Project Report: Restoring Mobility & Dignity Through Wheelchair Support

Organisation: Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO)
Project Status: Active – Fundraising Phase

1. Project Overview

Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) is implementing a humanitarian initiative aimed at improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities in Eastern Uganda through the provision of 200 wheelchairs.

This project seeks to restore mobility, independence, and dignity to vulnerable individuals who are currently unable to access assistive devices due to poverty and limited availability. By providing free wheelchairs, TICO aims to enhance access toeducation, healthcare, and community participation.

2. Financial Status Update

       Total Project Goal: $30,000

        Funds Raised to Date: $0

        Remaining Balance: $30,000

        Number of Donors: 0

        Monthly Donors: 0

At present, the project remains in its initial fundraising phase, and no financial contributions have been received. TICO is actively engaging potential donors and partners to mobilize resources for implementation.

3. Current Progress

Despite the lack of funding, preparatory activities are already underway to ensure smooth implementation once resources are secured:

  •          Conducted community consultations and needs identification in Eastern Uganda
  •          Identified potential beneficiaries, prioritizing the most vulnerable individuals
  •          Developed a transparent selection and distribution framework
  •          Established plans for assessment, fitting, and follow-up support services
  •          Initiated logistics planning for delivery to remote communities

These steps reflect TICO’s readiness and commitment to delivering impact efficiently once funding is available.

4. The Challenge

Uganda faces a significant disability burden, with approximately 5.5 million people  living with disabilities. Many individuals with physical impairments cannot afford wheelchairs due to:

  •         High costs of assistive devices
  •         Limited availability in rural and underserved areas
  •         Poverty and lack of financial support

As a result, many remain:

  •        Socially isolated
  •        Dependent on caregivers
  •        Excluded from education and employment opportunities
  •        Unable to access healthcare services

This lack of mobility perpetuates cycles of poverty and vulnerability.

5. Project Solution

This initiative will provide 200 free wheelchairs to individuals who cannot afford them, ensuring:

  •         mproved mobility and independence
  •         Increased access to schools, hospitals, and workplaces
  •         Greater participation in social and economic activities
  •         Reduced reliance on caregivers

The project also includes beneficiary assessment, proper fitting, and follow-up support to ensure long-term usability and impact.

6. Expected Long-Term Impact

Once implemented, the project is expected to:

  •          Enable 200 individuals to live more independent and dignified lives
  •          Increase access to education and employment opportunities
  •          Reduce long-term dependency on caregivers
  •          Promote social inclusion and participation
  •          Strengthen economic contribution at household and community levels

Ultimately, this intervention will contribute to breaking barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from reaching their full potential.

7. Donation Impact Breakdown

Donor contributions will directly translate into life-changing support:

$15 – Supports transport and delivery of a wheelchair to a remote community

$30 – Covers assessment and follow-up support for one beneficiary

$50 – Helps repair and maintain wheelchairs for long-term use

$75 – Supports partial cost of one wheelchair

$150 – Fully funds one wheelchair

       $300 – Provides two wheelchairs

$750 – Supports five individuals with wheelchairs and follow-up services

$1,500 – Empowers ten individuals with mobility and independence

8. Challenges

The primary challenge remains lack of funding, which has delayed:

  •           Procurement of wheelchairs
  •           Beneficiary assessments and fittings
  •           Distribution logistics to remote areas
  •           Implementation of follow-up support services

9. Next Steps

TICO is intensifying efforts to secure funding through:

  •           GlobalGiving campaign promotion
  •           Donor outreach and partnerships
  •           Awareness campaigns highlighting disability inclusion

Once funds are secured, the organisation will immediately begin:

  •           Procurement of quality wheelchairs
  •           Beneficiary verification and assessments
  •           Distribution and follow-up support

10. Appreciation & Call to Action

Although no funds have been raised yet, the need for this project is urgent and critical. TICO remains committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind.

We invite donors and partners to support this life-changing initiative. Your contribution will restore mobility, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Conclusion

While still in the fundraising stage, this project has strong potential to transform lives and promote inclusive development in Eastern Uganda. With your support, we can turn this vision into reality.
