WHEEL CHAIRS FUNDRAISING

By KKONDE BADRU | ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

1. Project Overview

Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) is implementing a humanitarian initiative to improve the quality of life of persons with physical disabilities in Eastern Uganda through the provision of 200 wheelchairs to vulnerable individuals.

The project seeks to restore mobility, independence, dignity, and equal opportunities for people living with disabilities who are unable to afford assistive devices due to poverty and limited access to healthcare services. By providing appropriate wheelchairs and follow-up support, the initiative will enable beneficiaries to access education, healthcare, employment, and community life with greater independence.

We are delighted to share that the project has received its first donation of US$1 through the GlobalGiving platform. Although modest, this first contribution represents an important milestone and officially marks the beginning of the project's fundraising journey.

Every successful humanitarian initiative begins with a single act of generosity. This first donor has demonstrated confidence in our vision to restore mobility and dignity to persons with disabilities. We remain committed to building on this momentum as we continue engaging new donors and partners to achieve our fundraising goal.

3. Current Progress

Although implementation has not yet commenced due to funding limitations, TICO has completed several important preparatory activities to ensure efficient project delivery once sufficient resources are secured.

Key achievements include:

  • Conducted community consultations and disability needs assessments in target districts across Eastern Uganda.
  • Identified potential beneficiaries, prioritizing the most vulnerable individuals with limited mobility.
  • Developed a transparent beneficiary selection and wheelchair distribution framework.
  • Designed assessment, fitting, and post-distribution follow-up procedures.
  • Initiated logistical planning to reach beneficiaries living in remote and underserved communities.
  • Continued stakeholder engagement with community leaders, health workers, and disability advocates.

These preparations demonstrate TICO's readiness to begin implementation immediately after the required funding is secured.

4. The Need

Uganda continues to face significant challenges in providing assistive devices to persons with disabilities. Many individuals living with physical impairments remain without wheelchairs because of:

  • High cost of assistive devices.
  • Limited availability of quality wheelchairs in rural communities.
  • Widespread poverty among affected households.
  • Inadequate access to rehabilitation and mobility services.

Without appropriate mobility support, many people with disabilities experience:

  • Social isolation.
  • Dependence on caregivers.
  • Limited access to education and healthcare.
  • Reduced employment and livelihood opportunities.
  • Increased poverty and exclusion from community life.

The project aims to address these barriers by ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive appropriate mobility assistance free of charge.

5. Project Solution

Upon receiving the required funding, TICO will procure and distribute 200 quality wheelchairs to vulnerable persons with physical disabilities across Eastern Uganda.

The project will include:

  • Professional beneficiary assessment.
  • Appropriate wheelchair fitting.
  • Safe distribution.
  • User orientation and basic maintenance guidance.
  • Follow-up visits to monitor utilization and beneficiary well-being.

This comprehensive approach will maximize the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of the intervention.

6. Expected Impact

The project is expected to produce significant and lasting outcomes, including:

  • Restoring mobility and independence for 200 persons with disabilities.
  • Improving access to education, healthcare, employment, and community participation.
  • Reducing long-term dependence on caregivers.
  • Promoting dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunities.
  • Strengthening household resilience through increased economic participation.
  • Contributing to disability inclusion and sustainable community development.

8. Challenges

The principal challenge remains inadequate financial resources.

The funding gap continues to delay:

  • Procurement of wheelchairs.
  • Beneficiary assessments and fittings.
  • Distribution logistics to remote communities.
  • Follow-up monitoring and support services.

Despite these challenges, TICO continues to prepare for implementation while expanding fundraising efforts.

9. Next Steps

To accelerate implementation, TICO will continue to:

  • Increase visibility of the project through the GlobalGiving platform.
  • Strengthen donor outreach and strategic partnerships.
  • Conduct awareness campaigns promoting disability inclusion.
  • Engage corporate organizations, foundations, and philanthropic supporters.

Once funding is secured, the organisation will immediately:

  • Procure high-quality wheelchairs.
  • Conduct beneficiary verification and clinical assessments.
  • Distribute wheelchairs across target districts.
  • Provide fitting, user training, and follow-up support.

10. Appreciation

Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation sincerely appreciates the generosity of the project's first donor, whose US$1 contribution marks the beginning of this important journey.

While there is still a long way to go before reaching the fundraising target, every donation brings renewed hope to persons with disabilities waiting for the opportunity to regain their mobility and independence.

We also thank everyone who has shared, promoted, and supported this campaign through advocacy and encouragement.

11. Call to Action

Our journey has begun with one donor and one dollar.

We now invite compassionate individuals, companies, foundations, and development partners to join us in restoring dignity and independence to persons with disabilities in Eastern Uganda.

Every contribution—regardless of its size—moves us closer to providing life-changing mobility assistance to someone who has waited far too long for the opportunity to move freely again.

Together, we can replace barriers with opportunity and transform lives, one wheelchair at a time.

Conclusion

The project has officially entered its fundraising journey with the receipt of its first donation of US$1. Although US$29,999 is still required to reach the fundraising goal, this initial contribution represents an encouraging start and demonstrates confidence in the project's vision.

With strong planning already completed and implementation systems in place, TICO is fully prepared to begin delivering wheelchairs immediately once adequate funding is secured. We remain optimistic that, through continued donor support and strategic partnerships, this initiative will restore mobility, dignity, and hope to 200 vulnerable persons with disabilities across Eastern Uganda.
