Poverty forces thousands of Ugandan teenagers out of school each year. Girls are especially vulnerable to child marriage when education becomes unaffordable. In Uganda, one in three girls is forced into child marriage. Only one in 10 returns to school. Margaret was one of them. After her mother became terminally ill, her family could no longer pay school fees, and relatives urged her parents to marry her off. Today, funding cuts threaten to push many more vulnerable students out of school.
We seek to raise $100,000 to provide scholarships that keep at-risk teenagers in school and protect their futures. Founded by Brian Mutebi, who overcame orphanhood through the kindness of others, the Brian Mutebi Dream Scholarship Fund has already supported 80 orphans, survivors of violence, and girls at risk of child marriage. Margaret received the Dream Scholarship in 2019 and graduated from university in 2024. Scholarships help girls like Margaret attain an education and realise their dreams.
Education transforms lives for generations. By keeping vulnerable teenagers in school, this project will reduce child marriage and school dropout, improve employment opportunities, and help girls break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families.
