From Education to Independence: Empowering Blind Girls to Build Their Future

Mitra Jyothi’s Higher Education Support Programme for visually impaired Girls continues to provide young women from underserved backgrounds with the opportunity to pursue higher education in an environment that supports both academic achievement and independent living.

Seven Girls, Seven Journeys of Possibility

Currently, seven girls are continuing their education through the programme:

  • 3 girls (age 17 years) – Pre-University Year 1
  • 1 girl (age 18 years) – Pre-University Year 2
  • 2 girls (age 19 years) – Undergraduate Year 1
  • 1 girl (age 20 years) – Undergraduate Year 2
  • One girl from the Undergraduate Year 2 program discontinued her studies due to personal reasons.

For these seven young women, access to education means much more than attending college. It is about creating the confidence, skills and opportunities they need to shape their own futures.

Creating an Enabling Environment

Throughout their stay, the girls receive safe and comfortable accommodation and nutritious meals, allowing them to focus on their education without the additional burden of managing their basic needs.

They also have access to a range of accessible learning technologies and resources, including laptops, smartphones, DAISY devices, U Read and KIBO XS devices, Braille books and audio books. Volunteer tutors provide additional academic support whenever required.

These resources enable the girls to access information independently and participate more fully in their academic environment.

Learning to Live Independently

A key strength of the programme is its focus on life skills and independent living alongside formal education.

All seven girls use the white cane and independently walk to and from college. They are learning to navigate their surroundings with confidence and manage everyday responsibilities. Some have also developed their culinary skills and are able to prepare delicious meals themselves.

The girls are being introduced to financial management and responsible decision-making, helping them prepare for the practical realities of independent adult life.

Discovering Their Talents and Interests

Education is complemented by opportunities to explore their interests and build confidence. The girls participate in extracurricular activities of their choice, including music, dance, sports, yoga and fitness.

They also actively participate in college cultural events and some have joined the Girl Guides movement, giving them opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, social interaction and a sense of belonging.

The Impact Beyond the Classroom

The most significant impact of the programme is the transformation from dependence to growing independence.

The girls are not only pursuing academic qualifications; they are learning to travel independently, use technology, manage everyday responsibilities, participate in social and cultural activities, and make choices about their own lives.

They are becoming young women who can dream, aspire and plan for a future of their choice.

Today, these seven girls are a happy and determined group, full of aspirations and possibilities. With continued education, accessible technology, mentoring and life-skills support, they are steadily preparing themselves to step into the wider world with confidence, dignity and independence.

Every Girl Deserves the Opportunity to Dream

For a visually impaired girl from a disadvantaged background, the opportunity to pursue higher education is life-changing. Your support helps remove barriers that might otherwise prevent her from continuing her education and building an independent future.

Together, we are helping these young women move beyond limitations and towards a future where their aspirations—not their disability—define their possibilities.
