Save the Children's work in the Philippines

By Riel Andaluz | Sr. Manager for Corporate Partnerships

Your support has allowed us to improve health, nutrition and livelihood opportunities for Filipino children and their families. We have made significant accomplishments under these programs that were made possible by your donation to Save the Children.  By pooling donations from our various donors including those from the GlobalGiving platform, we have:

  • Implemented our program to improve the health and nutrition of malnourished children in Samar.
  • Provided 205 pregnant and lactating mothers with infant and young child feeding key messages as part of parent education. We also provided 1,842 parents and caregivers with increased knowledge on the first 1000 days through parent education sessions
  • Improved the water facilities of at least 800 households in three barangays in Samar province, as well as provided 85 households in five barangays with sanitary latrines and water kits.
  • Provided training and tools for 23 health personnel on addressing acute malnutrition, and to 15 civil society organizations and people's organizations on basic nutrition concepts and the link of social protection/safety nets as nutrition-sensitive program.
  • Provided training to 359 village officials in 38 villages on Social Protection services and introduced the Barangay (Village) Social Protection and Related Initiative Links (BSPRIL) approach, with 22 barangays expressing interest in adopting this approach.
  • We were able to provide livelihood support through the Department of Social Welfare and Development's Sustainable Livelihood Program with total fund of Php 2,010,000 benefiting a total of 1,875 members and their families thus resulted to increased food production, livelihood recovery and participation in nutrition programming.
  • Our advocacy work resulted in a yearly increase in the budget for nutrition of Villareal from Php 725,000 to Php 1.4M budget from 2021-2023.

By donating to Save the Children, you also enable our work on Disaster risk reduction.  We are proud to have assisted 154 barangays (village) in enhancing their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plans with health and child-centered indicators.

Down south, we are  building peace and protecting children in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). We raised awareness and understanding about the rights of children, how to protect children at all times, and negative effects of child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) among 1,192children (729 girls, 463 boys) and 757 adults (459 women, 298 men) in BARMM. We worked with children and youth groups in the development and distribution of a booklet titled “Bata, Bata, Hindi Ka Pa Handa Gumawa ng Bata” (Children, You are Not Ready to Have Your Own Children) which talked about the rights of children and the risks of early marriage.Through Save the Children Philippines’ technical assistance, 6 elementary schools, 6 muslim schools and 6 barangays in Maguindanao developed their respective Child Protection Policies, Code of Conduct, and Referral Pathways
