The Philippines has a learning crisis that needs your help. Nine (9) out of 10 Filipino children in late primary age struggle to read and write simple text and 80% of Filipino students failed to meet basic reading proficiency, remaining one of the lowest-ranked countries. To address this, we provide play-based sessions that help children improve reading skills through a safe, inclusive, and level-appropriate approach through our Catch-Up Clubs.
The Philippines was shocked by the data that almost 19 million Filipino graduates from High School are functionally illiterate. Functional illiteracy refers to individuals who can read, write, and compute-but struggle with comprehension, making it hard to apply these skills in real-life situations like understanding instructions, reading signs, or filling out forms. This challenge is mostly due to socio-economic inequalities and educational system gaps.
Catch-up Clubs is a play-based model of remedial reading designed for children in the upper primary grades (Grades 4-6.) It employs a Teaching at the right Level approach in learning, where children are grouped according to reading level. This evidence-based replicable solution helps children reach their full potential and empowers struggling learners to regain literacy and confidence. It also supports in building support among parents to prioritize the right of their children to learn.
Our goal is to be able to replicate and set up at least a hundred (100) more catch-up clubs so that we can contribute to addressing this crisis in education. Empower every child to read, one play at a time.
