Taking my time to progress

Yoryi, still a little shy
Yoryi, still a little shy

Hi, I'm Yoryi! I am now 25 years old and live in Yaguita de Pastor with my mother. Since I was born I have learned things in a different manner as other children and I also have to take medication.

In 2011, when I was 5 years old, Mami asked the Fundación Cuidado Infantil Dominicano to visit me to help me learn at home, since they did not accept me at any preschool. Aunty Yanilda, who visited us, taught Mommy how to teach me to be more independent, how to dress myself, eat healthy, stay in my yard, and say "No" if they offer me something on the street and many other things.

In 2011 I had learned all skills of the method they are using and had reached the level to go to school, but none would take me, so I sort of started wandering around in my community for a few years until in 2016 the same foundation started a group for adolescents and young people with problems like me. We now receive twice a week classes in the morning, and it is not far from my house!  Adalgisa teaches me and I love doing puzzles, coloring, but I am also learning to be more punctual, responsible, how to take care of my personal hygiene, wash my clothes, bath, play dominoes and socialize more.

Before, when I saw a lot of people I would get very nervous and they had to take me home because I wanted to run away. Now I am anxious that they will organize another outing with all the 4 groups, to get together with my all my companions and the other groups doing fun things.

I really enjoyed the trip to the Botanical Garden in July this year!!

                                 ***********************

Yoryi, like the other 20 young people with disabilities in the 4 groups, is slowly maturing and we hope one day in the coming years he will be able to hold down a proper job, like some of the others have found since they learned the proper skills in the group.

Thank you for your support that will continue to help us provide for children like Yoryi, when he was small, and young persons like Yoryi at a what older age, the learning environment that helps them to be included in the social context of their families and communities.
