Challenge

The earthquake caused some 3,800 deaths, 5,100 injuries and 116 missing persons, with over 207,000 people displaced (OCHA). 55,000 homes, 2,600 schools, 304 hospitals and clinics, as well as 400 roads and bridges were damaged or destroyed. More than 17.2 million people live in the affected areas, with over 9.1 million exposed to the strongest tremors. A further 2 million people are in need of assistance, in addition to the 4.3 million already at risk (UN).

Solution

MSF has deployed mobile clinics to cover different villages and refer patients for more specialized care. Our teams also organize health promotion and education sessions, focusing on good hygiene practices and disease prevention. We provide psychological first aid to communities and train 3 referral hospitals in infection prevention and control. We have distributed 2,101 hygiene kits and shelter materials. We provide sanitation and access to drinking water.

Long-Term Impact

Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors without borders has been working in Myanmar since 1992 and introduced the first HIV treatments in the country and became in 2015 the leading supplier of antiretrovirals with treating over 35,000 patients, prior to the resurgence of the conflict in 2023. Its activities consisted of providing primary and secondary healthcare and guaranteeing a water supply.
