"AJAYAMAR"  is the name given by volunteers to the  2 month baby with insulin dependent type 1 diabetes
, who has made Jnanasanjeevini Diabetes Hospital [Samatvam Trust - Bangalore, India] his home, along with his mother and great grandmother.  The family comes from a remote village 100 miles from Bangalore.
He first arrived in August last year after being acutely sick for 3 weeks, with no certain diagnosis or treatment and left to die in the rural hospital, forcing the family to seek medical care in Bangalore city Government hospital.   It was here that the diagnosis of diabetes was done, and child's life was saved by the miracle drug of the 20th century -  insulin.
Prof Asha Benakappa from the team looking after this boy advised the mother and great grandmother to go to Jnana Sanjeevini Diabetes Hospital.
The family- 2 illiterate women, ie., mother and great grand mother -  who were totally bewildered and confused about the unheard of and unknown disease were able to obtain not only systematic and specialized diabetes health education, counselling and training [in day to day care of the child - multiple insulin injections, home blood glucose testing, food guidance, managing sick days and intercurrent illnesses etc], but also obtain free insulin, syringes, blood glucose meter, blood glucose strips, periodic blood and other tests, 24 hour free helplines and in future education support when he grows up. The boy has has now become much healthier.  He smiles, plays and even poses for the pictures.
We have also had international visitors to the clinic, during this time who have been moved by Ajaymar's story and helped start awareness campaigns to raise funds to help with our project
Many such children such as Ajaymar, come back with his /her family  to Jnana sanjeevini Diabetes Hospital, Bangalore, at least once in 3 months, for medical review and collecting their 3 monthly free medical supplies.
So we continue at Jnana Sanjeevini clinic, headquarters of Project DISHA (now a 3 decade project of Samatvam Trust)  to provide whatever possible medical, social, educational, employment and other support to [approximately 3000] such poor and needy children and youth with type 1 diabetes from Karnataka and neighboring States.
