Tankers of Water in Earthquake-Stricken Mindanao

By Rodney Z. | Project Leader

The 6.6 magnitude earthquake has resulted in severe damages to houses, government structures such as schools and water systems in the barangays in Magsaysay and Kibao.

The Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. (CJFI) and Sonshine Philippines Movement (SPM) responded to the lack of potable water supply in Barangay Upper Bala (Magsaysay), and Barangay Kibao (Matanao).

The water system of Barangay Upper Bala was destroyed by a landslide and killed two persons. The water reservoir was covered with thick earth that closed the water supply for the entire barangay of 830 families. As of today (Nov 14, 2019) the barangay still has no water supply.

In Barangay Kibao, there is no visible mark of earthquake damage to the houses and structures in the barangay. However, the 6.6 earthquakes destroyed the source of the barangay water system located 18 kilometers away from the barangay proper. According to the authorities, their first attempts to restore the water system to its normal supply but the Municipal Health Office (MHO) of Matanao tested the water and was still non-potable and unconsumable and positive of Escheria Coli bacteria.

The relief given to the residents by Children’s Joy Foundation was purely potable water. At least 6 tanker trucks of potable water carrying 17,000 liters of water in each tank were deployed to the site. When the relief team arrived in Upper Bala, which the first distribution site, hundreds of water containers were lined up already in the road.

According to the people and the leaders in the barangay, they were very impressed that CJFI is the only CJFI non-profit able to supply overflowing potable water to all the residents and victims that the containers weren’t even enough.

Barangay Kagawad Ruth Flores of Barangay Upper Bala has repeatedly expressed her deep gratitude to CJFI and SPM of the potable water. The kids in one of the evacuation centers shouted of gratefulness to Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, the founder of CJFI and SPM.

After the relief operations in Magsaysay, the team proceeded to Barangay Kibao still with tankers and boxes of bottled mineral water.

Brgy Kibao reported that they have a total of over 200 affected families by the lack of potable water. Upon the arrival of the tankers, the people were so happy.

Aside from the relief distribution, a team of Mcdonald's employee conducted a stress debriefing activities which made the young and old bursting in laughter as they watched and participated in the various games with gifts from Mcdonald to winners. “Stress debriefing” is an activity conducted in order to erase the traumas felt by the children, as well as the adults.

The barangay captain was so happy with the assistance. According to him, the potable water supply provided by Children’s Joy Foundation is already good for a week.

Barangay Captain Bacamante expressed:

“Salamat gyod kaayo sir. Dako kaayo ni nga tabang sa amo tungod kay tanan nakadawat gyod. Kamo lang nakahimo ani. Salamat kang Pastor sir” (Thank you so much sir! This is already a huge help for every affect family that has received the packs and has filled their containers with drinkable water. You are the only one that was provided this! Thank you so much for the CJFI founder Pastor)
