Independent Community Pharmacies Throughout the Mid-Atlantic Experience Devastating

Flooding | July 2025

The NCPA Foundation provided critical funding to independent community pharmacies in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia impacted by flooding in recent months. These pharmacies serve as essential healthcare lifelines in their communities, making their recovery a top priority.

The NCPA Foundation's Disaster Relief grant funding helped cover reopening costs and enabled these pharmacies to resume serving their patients. All of these pharmacies are located in rural pharmacy shortage areas, where access to pharmacies is limited, often due to a combination of distance and socioeconomic factors. Given this, the need for these stores to be up and running is important for the communities they serve.

Martin, Kentucky: Floodwaters rose to one and a half feet inside the independent community pharmacy, destroying inventory and computer servers while causing extensive damage to walls and floors. The store's delivery vehicle was also flooded, further limiting their ability to serve patients.

Richlands, Virginia:A 25-year independent community pharmacy was inundated when the river behind the store overflowed, sending approximately one foot of water throughout the entire facility, causing damage through the lower part of the store.

Iaeger, West Virginia: Heavy rainfall caused severe structural damage in the independent community pharmacy, with the floor, walls, and ceiling collapsing in the back section of the store, leaving the building exposed to the elements. The pharmacy lost power along with heating and cooling systems. They were able to establish a temporary location to continue serving patients during reconstruction.

These recovery efforts demonstrate the Foundation's commitment to maintaining essential healthcare access in underserved communities. Due to the severe weather throughout the United States, we anticipate more disasters in the coming months.
