Summary

The NCPA Foundation Disaster Relief Fund was established to provide financial assistance to community pharmacy owners for the repair of their pharmacies in the event of disaster, accidents, illness, or other adverse circumstances. Independent pharmacies are often the only accessible health care provider for patients after a disaster. By supporting these pharmacies a more effective & immediate disaster response is possible, leading to better resiliency in the face of future disasters.

Challenge

Disasters, accidents, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances can severely disrupt independent community pharmacies. This can be due to damage to the physical pharmacy itself, loss of inventory, or even the pharmacist's own health issues. Independent pharmacies are often the first and sometimes the only accessible healthcare provider, especially in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. When they are unable to function, communities lose vital access to medications and other health services.

Solution

By providing much needed financial assistance, these pharmacies can get back up and running as quickly as possible, ensuring continued access to healthcare in times of crisis. Often they have to become creative with how they resume service to their communities, and this funding helps them do that until insurance, other assistance, and income can resume and start the recovery process.

Long-Term Impact

By ensuring independent community pharmacies not only feel supported, but are supported during times of disaster, we can make it possible for communities to have healthcare access that is available long-term, thereby preventing pharmacy deserts in their communities. By supporting this effort, we are reducing long-term barriers to medication and healthcare services. Having these trusted healthcare providers readily available after a disaster is essential for long-term recovery.
