Our project is wrapping up. For the past two years, during the pandemic, we worked with our Honduran partners to deliver hundreds of meals to thousands of Hondurans; to help dozens of farm families get the supplies they need to plant basic grains; to support groups starting and expanding small businesses, which give families the ability to support themselves and their communities. Groups of women running bakeries, selling canned fruit, neighborhood tortilla factories, little electric corn mills serving rural communities, and developing local farmers markets. We also sponsored the distribution of toothbrushes and toothpaste to children, accompanied by instructions from local dentists on oral higiene. , None of this would be possible without the dedicated work of our partners and their community conacts in rural Honduras. And none of it would have been possible without the help of generous donors.

This next year we will begin to travel again. We will renew our relationship with past partners, and begin new ones with rural health providers in their clinics. We will augment their efforts with ours, and their supplies with ours. We will return to sending specialists to regional hospitals. And we will continue to support nutrition, rural economic development projects, and oral higiene education.

Many many thanks for your help. And look for a description of your new projects in the fall.

For the past year and a half, Missoula Medical Aid has partnered with two regional offices of Save the Children--Honduras (La Esperanza and San Lornezo), and with Manos de Amor, in Sigutepeque to get food to needy families, and agricultural supplies to farmers to grow basic grains. Our relationships with our partners are long and intimate, so for as little as fifty dollars, they can get a monthly supply of food and higiene supplies to a family of four, or fertilizers and supplies to a farm family. We also, through our partners, have helped hundreds of sick people who live in rural areas get rides to the hospital, and helped small groups build or supply rural bakeries. We also fund a dental higiene program that supplies 3000 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste to rural children, and that uses local dentists to teach the kids how to use them. We also partner with the Lion's Club of La Esperanza to run a dental and eye clinic. The club supplies and manages the clinic, and we pay the part-time salaries of the dentist and eye technicion.

We used the money we raised in through GlobalGiving last spring to support a Save the Children, Honduras program to bolster food security, help small business, and provide dental hygiene supplies and education in rural communties of the departamento de Intibuca, Honduras. The activies supported were as follows:

  • 150 farmers received continued support of fertilizers to increase production of crops, approximately $40 per farm.
  • 28 families, whose heads of household are women owning 4 small cooperative bakeries, received monetary support to expand/support their existing operations with items such as cooking supplies, tortilla press, stoves, and coolers.  Approximately $2000 will be divided to support these small business owners.
  • 1816 school age children received dental care kits and oral hygiene education.  Approx cost is $1 per child.

A complete report of the projects we supported in Honduras is attached. This year, 2021-2021, we will continue to support helping the poorest families get supplementary food, helping farmers grow basic grains, medical referrals for the sick or injured who cannot get to a hospital, and small business grants. Missoula Medical Aid has worked in rural Honduras for 23 years, and we have trusted Honduran partners and staff who can get a lot done with very little money.
