Six months have passed in Oinofyta and many major changes have been made to our community here thanks to the generosity of our wonderful donors. Our role has become more defined and we have full management of the camp and are working closely with other organizations to coordinate all of the activities and processes here.
The camp has grown to a stable population of 650 residents. We have 203 children who are of school age. They are studying in the renovated school and also in our Computer Education Center that was installed in August. We have 18 computers for the teenagers and adults to use for continuing their education.
Our initial small kitchen has been expanded to two working kitchen spaces, with a third one being built right now. We have 28 working burners for the families to cook on and the last kitchen will be finished with an additional 15 burners.
We have a barber/beauty shop and a sewing center for the residents. Those who were working in that capacity before leaving their home country are very happy to have the chance to continue using their skills.
The chicken coop has been built and our flock is now up to 85 chickens. They are providing fresh eggs for our residents and jobs for several of them as they manage the coop. We will be adding more chickens soon.
With winter coming soon, we have taken on a project to help winterize the building by waterproofing the roof so that when it rains outside it won’t rain inside. This has been one of our biggest projects to date.
Finally, we are providing supplemental food for the residents because the meals provided by the government are mostly starches with no fresh vegetables or fruits. We have a local farm cooperative where we get all of our vegetables and they deliver once a week. We also provide fresh fruit twice a week.
We have committed to being here until at least May of 2017 and are grateful for the support provided to us from the generosity of our Global Giving donors.
