By Lisa Campbell | Camp Manager
For the past three months, we have been very busy here in Greece at the Oinofyta refugee camp. Our camp has grown from 78 residents to over 225! In this up coming week we have been told we are getting 300 new residents to add to our population. Originally we were going to provide a sewing center and some small garden plots, but Do Your Part was asked to manage the camp so we have taken on that project. The sewing project has been put on hold temporarily, and the seed project is small but operational.
We have already completed several projects that have directly benefitted the residents. Our first project was to renovate an existing building to house our school with three classrooms, a mom and baby space and a children’s play area for those under age five. The residents provided the labor, and we provided the materials. The rooms are now complete and being used every day.
We are currently working on building a chicken coop so that they can harvest the eggs and eventually the chicken. We have container gardens, and micro gardens in place so that there are fresh herbs and some tomatoes as part of our seed project.
In cooperation with another small non-profit, we have built an outside cooking area so that our residents can cook for themselves. Along with this we are providing weekly produce orders with rice and cooking oil.
One of our favorite projects has been to provide a prosthetic leg for a young man who lost his leg 6 years ago and walked all the way from Afghanistan to Turkey on his old leg. The trip broke his leg in many places and we had to initially use duct tape to repair it as best we could. Thanks to our generous donors, we have been able to order him a new leg that is suitable for a young man to use.
We are also sourcing and providing the toiletries and laundry detergents for the camp. We have an agreement with a local supplier and they give us a weekly delivery.
Our work here will continue on for at least the next six months as we create a community for the refugees to live in as they wait for their asylum interviews.
We are sincerely grateful for the continued support of our donors – we couldn’t do what we do without you!
