Dignity and economic autonomy for rural women

Every donation made through this project helps create opportunities for young women living in rural communities within Brazil’s Atlantic Forest region. Thanks to a partnership between the Norberto Odebrecht Foundation and the *Casas Familiares Rurais* (Rural Family Schools) — which offer secondary education integrated with technical training — these young women receive an education grounded in rural realities, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience. Beyond their academic studies, they develop skills in agricultural management, strengthening their ability to farm sustainably, expand their rural enterprises, and build new prospects for the future.

One of these young women is Iasmin.

Growing up in the Lower South region of Bahia, she saw many young people leave their rural communities in search of work and better opportunities in urban centers. For a long time, it seemed like the only path available. However, her experience at the Rural Family School in the municipality of Igrapiúna changed how she envisioned her own future.

“Studying at the Rural Family School greatly improves our lives—economically, socially, and even mentally. We start to view family farming differently and realize it is possible to make a living from what we grow.”

During her studies, Iasmin discovered that agriculture goes far beyond planting and harvesting. Through practical projects and guidance from educators, she
learned to manage the property where she lives with her family as a genuine rural enterprise—an approach that yielded benefits extending well beyond herself.

“The projects developed at the school gave me the experience to handle a business, solve problems, and make decisions that bring returns not just for me, but for my family and community.”

The skills she acquired also contributed directly to her financial independence. During her time at the school, she produced nearly two tons of food. With the income generated, she was able to pay for the Agronomy degree program she is currently pursuing.

“It was an investment in my future and the result of my own hard work.”

Today, Iasmin sees opportunities where she once saw limitations. Instead of believing she needs to leave her community to thrive, she dreams of staying in the countryside, applying what she has learned, and contributing to local development.

“Young people who leave in search of opportunities elsewhere could transform their lives right here. The *Casa Familiar* is the gateway to transformation. I believe in this transformation because I live it every day.”
