Summary

The project aims to bring more dignity, food security and economic autonomy to 100 rural women living in isolated communities in the Atlantic Forest, as happened to Mailane dos Santos, 18 years old. By receiving technical assistance, solutions for access to basic sanitation services and alternatives for the consumption of clean water, encouraging the rational and sustainable use of natural resources, her family now have a safe source of income, pride in origin and quality of life.

Challenge

In isolated rural areas of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, young girls like Mailane dos Santos, aged 18, have many reasons for not envisioning a better future for themselves and their families: they live with open sewage, drink untreated water, have no bathrooms, not to mention sanitary pads or basic hygiene items. Despite severe poverty, the area where Mailane lives with her mother and seven siblings has great agricultural potential and exuberant environmental wealth - but without opportunities.

Solution

Mailane's reality began to change when several actions were implemented: she received a water potability system, an Ecological Septic Tank and menstrual dignity kits. She was also provided with technical assistance to start a vegetable garden and agricultural crops on her property. With better quality of life, her dreams are coming true. Just like Mailane, 100 rural women will be able to benefit, obtaining more dignity, food security and the long-awaited economic autonomy.

Long-Term Impact

Mailane became the protagonist of her story and many women could become so too. They will be proud of their origins and have better quality of life Once assisted with sanitation solutions and sensitized to environmental health care, they will be able to consume and make use of decontaminated water for food production, whether to contribute to food security or even increase family income by selling the surplus, bringing development to their regions.
