Project Report | Dec 8, 2023
Defending Human Rights of Migrants and Refugees

By Angela Sepulveda | Project Leader

During the execution of this project, the care model of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS Mexico) was adapted to the needs of people in conditions of greater vulnerability in forced mobility, considering that between 2020 and 2021 there have been registered a 472% increase in women in forced mobility processes in Mexico. In this sense, an intervention strategy was launched to identify and care for people who have suffered gender-based violence (GBV). Since its design, the intervention strategy has taken into account the participation of women themselves mainly through trusted groups of women in all territories.

In this context, several actions are proposed to respond to the specific needs of women and girls in situations of forced mobility on the southern and northern borders of Mexico. For example, the delivery of humanitarian aid adapted to the specific needs of the population from a gender perspective, which includes menstrual hygiene products and services, specialized medical and psychological care for women victims of sexual violence, among others. In addition, individual and group legal accompaniment and individual and group psychosocial accompaniment help women and girls to obtain information and legal protection against violence and sexual exploitation, as well as to receive emotional support to overcome traumas and stressful situations. Also, the implementation of workshops on gender equality and the promotion of reconciliation and hospitality processes with the host community contribute to generating awareness and sensitivity about the needs and rights of forced migrant women and girls, thus promoting gender equality and the protection of the human rights of this vulnerable population.
