Grounded in the belief that digital rights are human rights, LGBT Tech's PowerOn program is working to close the digital divide for LGBTQ+ communities. Through technology grants, we provide devices to LGBTQ+-serving organizations and individuals, expanding access and opportunity across the United States. PowerOn also provides holistic, culturally-informed digital literacy education and resources for LGBTQ+ communities, promoting online safety and digital skills.
LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately impacted by poverty and housing instability, limiting access to essential technology. In the U.S., 40% of youth experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+, and 22% of LGBTQ+ adults live in poverty. Without reliable devices, internet access, or digital skills, many are unable to apply for jobs, access healthcare, secure housing, or stay connected to support systems, making it difficult not just to thrive, but to meet basic needs.
PowerOn addresses digital inequity by providing both technology and hands-on support. Through technology grants, we distribute laptops, tablets, and smartphones to LGBTQ+ individuals and community organizations, expanding access to essential resources. Our Digital Navigator program complements this by offering digital skills training and personalized guidance, helping individuals use technology safely and effectively to find jobs, access healthcare, secure housing, and stay connected to support
By combining access to devices with digital skills and guidance, PowerOn equips LGBTQ+ individuals to fully participate in today's digital society. This leads to increased economic stability, improved access to healthcare and education, stronger community connections, and reduced barriers to housing and employment. Over time, this work helps close the digital divide and creates more equitable opportunities for LGBTQ+ communities nationwide.
