Young people in the DR lack access to technology and basic computer skills. We are implementing Microsoft's IT Academy across schools and community organizations to improve digital literacy for 1,000 young people under the age of 25 in Bonao and Villa Altagracia.
Dominican youth, especially those in rural communities, lack access to technology as a tool to improve learning and collaboration with other students. A lack of computers and trained teachers limit the opportunities for students to use software to improve their education.
Training instructors who will then teach and certify students will improve the digital literacy in these communities. The Dominican Foundation is leveraging Microsoft's IT Academy to implement a pilot program in two communities. Students will complete the curriculum and be certified in basic computer skills and Microsoft Office. As a result they will be better prepared for post-secondary education and employment opportunities.
Once this pilot program is completed it will be replicated with other schools and communities in the Dominican Republic. This program has the potential to reach thousands of at risk youth. The training will be expanded to additional topics and curriculum enhanced.
