DIGITAL LIBRARY AND LITERACY PROGRAM

By Joann Mwangi | Project Peer Leader

Dear Supporters of Safe Spaces,

The first time Joyline sat in front of a computer, she did not know how to move a cursor or type her name. At 12 years old, she had never used a computer before. There was no access to one at home and opportunities to interact with technology in her community were extremely limited. Like many children growing up in Mathare, the digital world felt very far away. Everything changed when her class began attending weekly sessions at the Safe Spaces Digital Library.

Today, Joyline approaches the computers with confidence and curiosity. Through regular visits with her class of approximately 30 pupils, she has learned basic computer skills, how to conduct guided online research and how to use digital resources to support her schoolwork. She especially enjoys discovering new information online and reading stories that expand her understanding of the world beyond her community. Joyline is one of approximately 450 pupils who benefit from the Digital Library each week through partnerships with six local primary schools. Since our last report, the library has continued providing computer lessons, access to educational resources, reading activities and academic support, helping children strengthen both their digital and literacy skills.

What makes Joyline's story so meaningful is that it reflects the experience of many children who walk through our doors. For hundreds of young learners in Mathare, the Digital Library provides opportunities they would otherwise not have—access to technology, information and a safe space to learn and grow. We continue to see children becoming more confident readers, more engaged learners and more willing to share their ideas and ask questions. We are deeply grateful for your support, which makes these opportunities possible. Because of your partnership, children like Joyline are discovering new possibilities for their future and gaining the skills they need to pursue them.

Thank You!
