SDG 4-Digital Library for Quality Education

By Peninah Musyimi | Project Leader and Founder.

Since 2020, the Safe Spaces Digital Library has provided 6,800 pupils from 14 schools access to educational resources, leading to improved academic performance and digital literacy. During COVID-19 lockdowns, it sustained education through remote classes, demonstrating its resilience and adaptability.

Valentine, a peer educator with Safe Spaces, embodies the spirit of a Global Citizen. At just 25, she has championed the Safe Spaces Digital Library, transforming education for 6,800 underserved students in Nairobi’s Eastland slums since 2020. Recognizing the barriers girls face—lack of access to textbooks, technology, and safe learning environments—Valentine has led outreach and training efforts, empowering girls aged 5-21 to thrive academically and beyond.

The Safe Spaces Digital Library exemplifies how technology can break barriers to education and create pathways out of extreme poverty. Launched in 2020, our Safe spaces Digital Library provides students in Nairobi’s Mathare slums with access to 30 computers loaded with Kenya’s school curriculum which helps with doing school homeworks for poor girls whose parents cannot afford to buy textbooks, e-books, and digital learning platforms. This innovative hub has already impacted 6,800 students from 14 schools, ensuring equitable access to academic and life skills resources.

We envision expanding the library’s reach, adding more e-learning hubs, and integrating advanced digital skills training to prepare young women for the global workforce and scaling access to benefit 10,000 more girls in 5 years.

All this could not have happened without your support and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity and kindness.

We wish you a healthy, Merry and Joyous Festive Season with the hope that you will continue holding our hands till we achieve our vision.

With deepest thanks from my heart

Peninah
