Digital Learning For 1000 Public School Students

Project Report | Oct 7, 2022

By Mofe' Joseph | Program Coordinator

The academic calendar for public schools in Lagos State for the 2021/2022 session ended in July and a new session was to begin in September. Whilst students were out of school for the holiday, the Foundation organized digital skilling and career exposition webinars for students across nineteen senior secondary public schools in Lagos State.

The goal of the webinars was not merely to engage the students through the holidays but most importantly to expose them to the different thriving digital careers in today’s world, pique their interests in the digital space, and prepare them to be successful in the world of work. Internet data was provided to some participants who indicated their need to be supported with data to attend the webinars. Over seventy students were in attendance for both webinars held on August 20 and 27 respectively.

The first webinar session titled Essential Digital Skills in a New World explored the skills and competencies needed to thrive in today’s digital world. Some of the skills explored included digital information storage, retrieving and accessing online information, online presentation, and organizing information.

The second webinar, Thriving Digital Careers for the New World, exposed students to high-income, fast-growing digital careers, some of which included digital marketing, programming/coding, data analytics, art/filmmaking, and cloud computing, and the resources required to pursue these careers.

Here are comments from some of the participants:

“I learned a lot of things. I would like to develop skills in copywriting, digital marketing, and 3D animation.”

“I plan to research further and utilize the list of learning resources to learn more about software development.”

“The training was interesting and educative. I am motivated to explore a career in IT.”

Informing and exposing children from lower-income families to the range of opportunities and possibilities out there, and helping them to find their path that will be both fulfilling and rewarding cannot be overestimated. Early exposure to the wide range of career options and a career path to follow broadens their view of what’s possible and helps them to aspire.
