The pandemic brought schooling to a halt for a couple of months in Nigeria just like in most parts of the world, and exposed critical gaps in the methods of learning. For students, especially those from low-income homes who do not have access to online learning, many hours of substantial and structured learning were lost.
To make up for learning loss for students, and to upskill teachers and close the skills gap among educators in public schools, the Foundation launched the Educating Via Zoom program, a webinar series designed to equip teachers for the delivery of effective online classes. As of the time of this report, a total of 167 teachers across the 14 public schools in Lagos State have participated in the webinar series.
Our efforts towards skilling the educators do not stop at the end of their participation in the webinar series; mini-grants are awarded to successful applicants to support the development of their newly acquired skills through the practice of online classes with their students via Zoom. More than 80 students have benefitted from the sessions delivered by grant recipients.
We recognize the role a teacher’s skill plays on the educational outcomes of their students and we would be intensifying our efforts in the days ahead to cover more schools, reach more teachers, and by extension more students.
