BUILDING TEACHER CAPACITY FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING

By Omobola Lana | Managing Consultant

We are keeping things digital and virtual at CKF, principally because we think it is important that we proceed cautiously in what we consider a transitioning period from the very restrictive Covid-19 and early post pandemic period.  Also, our primary constituency of girls from low income families in State public schools are negatively impacted by the digital divide that has become increasing more obvious in a post pandemic world.  To onboard as many of them as possible for relevance and competitiveness in an increasingly digitized world, we are committed to employing available digital tools to engage them digitally to deliver our solutions and interventions.

Following State approvals for programming, CKF delivered the first session of a three -part webinar series - Educating Via Zoom, a virtual teacher capacity building workshop that equips teachers for safe student engagement, optimal classroom management and effective delivery of virtual instruction.  The session took place on Saturday, 26 June with more than 70 teachers from seven Lagos state schools in attendance.  Our goal is to increase the digital proficiency of over 400 teachers in 2021.

Teachers and students in public schools in Nigeria still face the challenge of closing the huge academic gap caused by the pandemic.  Public education in Nigeria was already severely challenged but the pandemic made it worse, and the option of closing the gap through virtual learning has been very challenging to embrace because of the low digital proficiency of teachers, lack of devices and data on the students part and challenging home environments.

Our teacher capacity building program lays the background for other virtual programs targeted at thousands of public school students in the 2nd half of 2021.  Student focused programs will include virtual academic remediation, leadership and life skills workshops and digital skills training.

One of the participants in the 'educating via Zoom webinar, in their post session feedback said ' the lessons learnt for me today is awesome as I have more enlightenment to the use of zoom, among other things i learnt'.  Another said 'thank you for the very comprehensive information,  We really enjoyeded your session'.  We at CKF are of course glad we can add value; but especially thankful that because of donors like you we can do our little part in promoting equity on education.
