Many rural children in Sri Lanka lack access to computers and digital education due to poverty and limited resources. Sathkara Social Service Foundation has operated two free IT labs in Kalutara and Angunakolapalassa for more than four years. During this time, over 800 students have used our labs. This project will help 200 vulnerable children gain digital skills, improve education, and prepare for brighter futures.
In rural Sri Lanka, poverty remains a significant barrier to education. Most families in these areas simply cannot afford computers, internet access, or private IT tutoring. This lack of access creates a cycle of inequality, where talented students are deprived of the opportunity to develop digital literacy. Without these skills, they face limited prospects in the modern job market, hindering their chances to build independent and successful lives.
Our foundation is committed to changing this narrative. By strengthening and expanding our existing IT labs in Kalutara and Angunakolapalassa, we provide a consistent, free, and supportive space for learning. This project will directly facilitate: Equipping the Labs: Purchasing new, reliable computers, furniture, and essential learning materials to accommodate more students. Free Education: Providing high-quality, free IT training and digital literacy programs for 200 vulnerable children.
By investing in digital literacy today, we are investing in a more equitable tomorrow. Access to computer education significantly improves school performance and opens doors to higher education and better employment opportunities. Our goal is to empower these young people to break the cycle of poverty, gain confidence in their abilities, and become active contributors to the digital economy. Together, we can bridge the gap and give rural children in Sri Lanka the hope and skills they deserve.
