Ready to start

By David Taeubert | Head of Donation Administration

Dear Arche-Friends,

as the sun is still dipping the city into warm air, we are quite rightly looking forward to several weeks of (late) summer: No signs of changing seasons yet!

However, this time of year is already a time of change for our children: Summer holidays have passed and schools are opening their gates again. The daily routine is about to begin and we give lots of efforts to make our children ready to start! Every year, we consider these days to be some of the most important. In many cases, this time anticipates the path a child will take, at least in the medium run. Trailing behind right from the start is frustrating for anyone - especially at school while permanently being under pressure to perform. If a child is getting up on the wrong side at school’s beginning, it will - sadly - very likely also finish the year there.

Thus: Let’s get started! At DIE ARCHE, we adopt several approaches to make children in our houses fit for upcoming challenges. First of all, a fresh start needs a clear mind instead of unspoken thoughts and questions. For all of our pedagogues, that means to send a signal to the kids: We care about the things on their mind - and during six weeks of holidays, lots of feelings can easily be piled up. In this year, we spent several days with a workshop about emotions, where the kids developed worthwhile ideas concerning their feelings: When and why do I feel angry, fearful or joyful? We were delighted to see how the kids became self-reflected evermore. And we believe that such experiences strengthen them permanently.

For lots of our children, this time is also about meeting friends again. Quite often, they quickly feel familiar again among each other. Some friendships also grew during summer holidays as kids undertook something together: Anyway, we are happy having set the framework of these relations!

Of course, the right equipment also matters to achieve a well-prepared start: Thanks to a great support, we were able to allocate important school supplies such as writing and painting materials or school satchels and gym bags - not only the foundation of a promising learning environment. It also ensures that children coming to our houses won’t be left behind by their classmates because they are lacking things others have got.

We are certainly looking forward to the daily routine where the kids visit us to have a warm lunch, share their thoughts and stories from school and then laugh, talk, play, learn, exercise, paint, do handicrafts, make music, dance and so much more.Until then, we give everything to let our children justifiably say: Now I’m ready to start!

Dear ARCHE-supporters: a heartfelt thanks for enabling us to be there for children in need. We would be grateful if our work remains close to your heart in the future - united, we can create a strong answer to child poverty!
